The storefront is the easy part of a serious commerce build
A good-looking Shopify theme is a few weeks of work. What takes the time on a serious build is everything the theme sits on: a product data model that survives your merchandising team's actual needs, inventory that reconciles with the system your warehouse runs, subscription logic that handles pauses, skips and failed payments without losing customers, and a B2B flow with account-specific pricing. These are the parts that determine whether the store still works well in two years.
Subscriptions are the clearest example. Building recurring billing is straightforward; handling the real cases is not. A card expires mid-cycle, a customer wants to skip one month and change the next, an address changes between orders, a product is discontinued while people are subscribed to it, and dunning has to retry without irritating the customer into cancelling. Most subscription complaints are about these paths, not about the initial signup.
The same applies to B2B. Company accounts, tiered price lists, purchase orders, credit terms and approval workflows are a substantially different commerce model from consumer checkout, and Shopify supports some of it natively depending on plan while the rest needs building. Establishing which is which before design starts saves considerable rework, and it is a question sales conversations tend to skip.
We have delivered 500+ products for 400+ clients across six countries since 2013 and hold a 5.0 rating on Clutch. On commerce work that experience shows up as knowing which requirements the platform will resist, which apps are worth their performance cost, and where a simpler build converts better than an ambitious one that loads slowly.
From commerce requirement to running store
Model the Catalogue
Products, variants, metafields and collection logic designed around how your team merchandises — not reverse-engineered from the current site.
Decide Platform vs Custom
What Shopify does natively, what an app handles well, and the narrow set that genuinely justifies custom code and its ongoing maintenance.
Build & Test Edge Paths
Failed payments, partial refunds, out-of-stock during checkout, subscription skips. The paths that decide whether customers stay.
Launch & Measure Real Users
Low-traffic publish with a rollback path, then field performance and funnel data rather than a single lab score.
Frequently Asked Questions
What merchants ask before committing to a commerce build.
When is Shopify Plus actually worth the cost?
+
When you need checkout extensibility, Shopify Functions for custom discount, shipping or payment logic, B2B features, multiple storefronts under one account, or the higher API limits that high volume requires. If your requirement is essentially a well-built consumer store at moderate volume, standard Shopify with a good theme does the job and the difference is better spent elsewhere. The honest test is whether you can name a specific capability you need that only Plus provides.
What does headless Shopify with Hydrogen give us?
+
Full control of the front end, the ability to use React and modern tooling, and potentially excellent performance. What it costs you is app compatibility — most Shopify apps assume a Liquid storefront and simply will not work — plus a build and hosting pipeline you now own, and merchandising workflows like theme editing and preview that must be rebuilt for your team. It is a strong fit for large catalogues with a dedicated front-end team, and usually the wrong answer for a brand that mainly needs a fast, easily merchandised store.
Can you build a custom subscription engine?
+
We can, though we would first check whether an established subscription app meets your needs, because they handle the tedious parts — dunning, card updater services, customer portals — that are easy to underestimate. Custom is justified when your billing logic is genuinely unusual: variable pricing per cycle, complex bundling, or a model no app expresses. If we build it, the design centres on the failure paths — expired cards, retries, skips, mid-cycle changes — since those are where subscription revenue is actually lost.
Do you handle B2B and wholesale on Shopify?
+
Yes. Shopify Plus includes native B2B with company accounts, catalogues and price lists, which covers a good proportion of requirements. Beyond that we build purchase-order flows, credit terms, approval chains, quantity-break pricing and account-specific catalogues. The design question worth settling early is whether B2B and consumer share one storefront or run separately, because the answer affects the data model and is expensive to change later.
How do multi-currency and international selling work?
+
Shopify Markets handles currency, pricing and local payment methods reasonably well, with per-market price adjustments and domains. The parts that need real attention are tax and duty — whether you present prices inclusive of duty or collect at delivery materially affects conversion and complaints — plus shipping rules, returns logistics per region, and content localisation. The technical setup is usually the smallest piece of an international launch.
Can you integrate with our ERP, WMS or 3PL?
+
Yes, through the Admin API with a middleware layer rather than direct coupling, so either side can change without rewriting the other. The critical decision is ownership: which system is authoritative for inventory, pricing and customer records. Two systems both believing they own stock levels is the most common failure in commerce integration, and it must be settled explicitly rather than assumed.
How long does a store like this take to build?
+
A well-built theme with standard integrations typically takes eight to fourteen weeks. Add subscriptions, B2B or ERP integration and it is realistically four to seven months. Migrations depend heavily on data quality in the source platform, which is the variable that most often extends a timeline — messy product data takes longer to map than anyone estimates at kickoff.
Who owns the code and the store afterwards?
+
You do, on payment — theme code, custom apps and configuration. The Shopify account, domain and third-party services should be in your organisation's name from the beginning. Handover to your team is built into the closing sprints, so running, merchandising and extending the store never depends on us still being involved.
